PRESENTATION OF THE TRIP

First, you learn about the surprising and little-known island of Bougainville, the secrets long hidden by a turbulent history, before attending the festival of masks of Rabaul, a tribute to the many cultures of the Bismarck Archipelago. Can meet you the Baining and attend their dances by the fire. Finally, It's the new Ireland and culture Malagan as you explore to finish this trip in Papua Islands.

THE PROGRAM

Day 1 (Wednesday 4 July) : FROM SINGAPORE TO PORT MORESBY
Arrival at Singapore and starting at 20 h 25 to Port Moresby with an Air Niugini flight. We recommend that you arrive in Singapore at least 4 hours before departure to Port Moresby.

Day 2 (Thursday 5 July) : PORT MORESBY AND TO BUKA
Arrival at 5.00 in the morning, passage of the customs, Welcome by our local team. Breakfast and departure to Buka, the capital of Bougainville. There is open again with your local team and facility in a comfortable hotel. Rest and visit of the town in the afternoon.

Day 3 (Friday 6) : TO ROTOKAS
Departure in the morning for two hours drive South, until Wakunai, where we take a fork to the mountains, to reach the village of Rotokas. It is in this mountainous and remote region, that we will discover the culture of the Uppe, a very complicated initiation system (and very long !) where young boys go in the bush to be initiated, This until the end of their adolescence. Welcome by dances and traditional party.

Day 4 (Saturday 7 July) : TO ARDARIUS (SOUTH BOUGAINVILLE)
We agree with the main road, along the coast, for returning to the South, up to the extreme south of the island, at Ardarius. Upon arrival,, We moved again in a village, where you will attend local dances. On the way, We see the former Panguna mine, who was the trigger for the civil war that ravaged the region over a decade. Here again, We meet many people who have experienced those dark years, who will be happy to share this experience with you.

Day 5 (Sunday 8 July) : ARDARIUS / DAY DANCES
We spend again this day in the vicinity of Ardarius, to discover the way of life and deepen your discoveries of local culture. We discover such amazing music-based split drums.

Day 6 (Monday 9 July) : TO LIZ
Road to Liz, in the centre of the island, where you attend there still traditional dances. Night in a local hotel, to find a little comfort.

Day 7 (Tuesday 10 July) : KIETA / RABAUL-KOKOPO
Flight of Kieta in Rabaul (Kokopo, new city) in the morning. Arrival at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Rest or visit in the afternoon.

Day 8/9 -Wednesday and Thursday 11 and 12 July : MASK FESTIVAL
Very early, worms 4 in the morning, the festival of the masks of Rabaul opens by the Kinavai, one of the most impressive rituals of the Tolai society. At sunrise of the day, the duk - duk (of the spirits incarnated by impressive masks covered with leaves) dancing on the dugouts before joining the beach to open the festival. In the morning begins, Rabaul festival, dedicated to the cultures of the islands of the Bismarck Archipelago : a unique opportunity to discover the masks and dances of many native groups from across the region (Bainings, Tolais, Kairak...). This festival lasts for two days. You will have access to a guide who will accompany you during the festival and help you. You will travel with the vehicle of the hotel.

Day 10 (Friday 13 July) : RABAUL / BAINING ETHNIC GROUP
We get up early, and by canoe, head for the beautiful setting, and base of the Tavurvur volcano. We will also discover the strange egg collection that takes place at the foot of the volcano. All this will of course depend on the activity of the volcano... Then, We visit the heart of the buried city ! Rabaul was the one of the most beautiful and liveliest cities in the Pacific, until it was buried under the ashes of the Tavurvur volcano when it erupted in 1994. To this day, it is still a lunar landscape, full of character; some some buildings are still occupied, such as the hotel where we will have lunch, symbol of a past that won't die. Then in early afternoon, We attend several dances including the fire of 'men minds' masked dances. It's one of the most impressive shows that Papua offers... Night in the Baining village.

Days 11 (Saturday 14 July) : BAINING VILLAGE
You spend the day in the Baining village, in the company of your hosts, make you visit the village and the surrounding area, and tell you more about masks and dances of their ethnic group.
Late afternoon, you join Kokopo and your hotel.

Days 12 (Sunday 15 July) : TO NAMATANAI / RUBIO LODGE
In the early morning, We take the boat (boat motor, two hours of crossing) to join Namatanai, in new-Ireland, the long and narrow island which faces Rabaul, where Shane is waiting for us, that will take us in his lodge. Day of cultural discoveries in villages in the vicinity of the lodge, used to understand how people live in this part of the world. You visit gardens, houses, villages and also attend traditional dances. You can also take time to enjoy the ocean again, since you are staying on the beach!.

Day 13 (Monday 16 July) : MALAGAN CULTURE AREA
Departure for the village of Libba, many sculptors malangans matters. Visits of the village, looking for sculptures and sculpture demonstration. In the late afternoon to the village of Fatmilak a few kilometres, where are you moving to overnight homestay.

Day 14 (Tuesday 17 July) : MALAGAN AREA
Once again, you spend the day in the village of Fatmilak, where you will attend Tatanua dances, and you can if you want join Libba village again to deepen your meetings.
In the afternoon, departure for Kavieng, the capital of new-Ireland. Installation to Kavieng to Nusa Resort, a lodge paradise once again.

Day 15 (Wednesday 18 July) : TO PORT MORESBY / TO SINGAPORE
Very early morning departure (aircraft to 5.50) to arrive at Port Moresby in 8.25. There we leave for visits in the capital (Museum, Botanical Garden, etc...) and we take a flight to Singapore to 14.25. Arrival in Singapore to 18.45, in time to take flights to Europe at the end of evening.
End of our services. Meals : PD
